We will learn about both poetry and music theory. Poetry will focus on rhyme scheme, rhythm, blank verse and word choice. We will use many methods to inspire ideas from other music, art work, journaling, drawing, using pure imagination and memory. Music theory covers song structure, sheet music notation, chromatic scale and orchestration. We will either sing our own creations or have others sing them for us, whichever is most comfortable for a budding songwriter. Not all writers are singers! As an example, Elton John wrote the “music” and performed the songs but his longtime writing partner, Bernie Taupin wrote the “lyrics”. We will discover together what elements students excel at and are most excited to create with.
